First, let me apologize for the strobe effect of the computer screen. If you have epilepsy, PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS! Just hit play and minimize the window until it's over. Second, those of you who don't have epilepsy, thank you for bearing with me and watching it despite the visual discomfort :) Now then... Just a thought here ... now might be a really good time to start thinking about preparedness. NASA is saying that the sun is reaching it's maximum point in it's 11 year cycle, at which point the north and south poles of the sun will flip. It is around this time that the sun will cast off it's largest solar flares. If a large enough solar flare comes directly at the Earth, it will create an EMP that will wipe out the power grid and every non-shielded piece of electronics on the planet. Experts say that Earth experienced the largest recorded direct solar flare in 1859, which is called the Carrington Event. At the time, the only notable large scale electrical equipment was the newly installed telegraph network and the first parts of the trans-Atlantic cable. The direct hit from the solar flare burned the telegraph wires, creating fires and explosions. The effects felt round the world last for three days. At the time, the trans-Atlantic cable was just being laid but also had to replaced due to the impact of the EMP on the equipment. Since then, countries have come to be dependent on electricity, electronic components and automated control systems to survive as a society. Experts say that a Carrington-type EMP event occurs every 100 years. However, it's been 154 years since that event, making Earth overdue for a similar event but with more catastrophic effects on critical infrastructures due to their dependency on electricity. What does this mean for me and you? Well, grocery stores only keep enough food on the shelves for 3 days. After that, unless you live on a farm, or have a garden in your back yard, the entire country will be out of food. Stores won't be able to restock because the nation's entire fleet of trucks have computerized engines, which will be burnt out by the EMP. Unless you have a very old car that has no electronics on it, ALL vehicles will be rendered DEAD in the case of a world wide EMP. Make sure you have a bicycle. While you're at it, make sure you have enough food to last until all of the delivery trucks can be repaired, and civilian supply lines have been reinstated. It might also be a good idea to have some guns and ammo ... because when the starving masses find out YOU have food ... guess who's getting a visit from every desperate mother and father looking to get food for their starving children. That's right ... you are, and they're not going to want to take no for an answer. Some other things to think about: With most of the world's money being held in banks and recorded only via electronic records, all of the word's monetary systems will collapse. There will be no currency. With no currency, and very little real money left in the world, you're going to have to barter for a while until someone comes up with a viable medium of exchange. With no electricity, we have no AC/Heat, and no refrigeration. You'll have to start warming with fire, cooking with fire. You'll have to find new ways to preserve food. You won't be able to put your left overs in the fridge and eat them tomorrow. They'll be rotten by then. FYI... DO NOT THINK FOR A SECOND that you will be able to HUNT for food. Why? Because every other guy with a gun is going to have that same exact idea, and the population of deer in the U.S. is actually LESS THAN the population of humans. There just isn't enough to go around, and if we all try to hunt them, we will drive them to extinction in a year. We may be able to get by with some rabbit because they have such a high reproduction rate. Now, again, please don't freak out. This is just food for thought. The chance is only about 1 in 9 something really bad will happen. Not great odds, but it's probably not going to happen. You're going to have to decide for yourself if 1 in 9 is good enough for you. If not, don't panic, just do something about it.
